Ontology Definition and Resource (another resource)

Here's a website called eHealth Ontology Project which has 3 good definitions plus other articles:
http://www.ehealthserver.com/ontology/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

I find it interesting they are polling people (on the right side of the page) with the following question:

What is Ontology?
  1. A machine-readable vocabulary
  2. A philosophy concept
  3. A science of the kinds and structures of objects, properties, events, processes and relations in every area of reality
  4. A formal explicit description of properties
  5. Constitutes a knowledge base or describes and represents an area of knowledge
  6. A description of the concepts and relationships that can exist for an agent or a community of agents

If I was to answer the poll, I would answer "all of the above" even though they don't offer it because I think I have seen all of these descriptions in just about everything I've read.  Maybe they are looking for a consensus.  Happy reading!

  1. I suspect that the variances in definitions offered, is reflective of the degrees of ambiguity in an area that should be well-defined! :)
