Week Two

Content:
Well this past week has been very interesting and informative (It must be the holiday weekend).  I found that the lecture from Monday was filled with information that helps to narrow down and focus on exactly what type of research is done in BMI as well as what the applications of research is.  More importantly I found that his segment on how to get into research, what to do for research, and research depth was interesting as well as an important set of advice/process that is good to know early on especially when consider the time frame of this program and how fast time flies.  Getting an early start is great.

Wednesday's lecture about ontology was just as interesting and informative.  I know that there are parts of it that is still murky but the overall sense I got is that ontology is important for defining and standardizing use.  As well despite the belief by some that there exists only one ontology,  I would have to agree with some of what Dr. Fridsma said about ontology is more perspective based, it depends on the use or purpose for which it was defined.  And I believe that is perspective that makes the world more interesting and things like ontology more difficult.  This lecture had also included some talks about controlled vocabulary and from my personal experience i have found that defined vocabulary is generally useful on the data management side of things but I also have found that users generally dislike it, users preferred to be able to type/input what they want.
