Research Methods: Dr. Greenes
Several of my questions regarding the logistics of how research should be conducted in BMI were answered. This lecture really laid the foundation of all the different components that make up complete research. Firstly, the different types of research in BMI were clearly identified. Models of reality look at information that already exists and help us develop a better understanding of medical processes. These can include anything from epidemiological maps to hospital workflow diagrams. Manipulations of reality involve adjusting models and can include types of simulation research. Empirical studies identify and map out questions to specific scientific problems and form the basis for future work. My main thoughts during the lecture revolved around using critical thinking processes and looking outside the norm to identify unique patterns using heuristics. Overall, the class really provided the how-to of conducting research, provided some general guidelines that apply to BMI, and reminded me not only to look at current problems in our field, but rather have an innovative type of attitude throughout the program.
