Simulation in Medical Training

It is a wonder that for some of the most intricate and life-saving work, there is no training that truly simulates the real life situation. This has occurred in the surgical field until now. Presently, there are some great inventions in the field that can truly have an impact on surgeons and medical students in the near future. The smart move is targeting the neurocognitive aspects of the surgeon because understanding decision making processes is the first step in evaluating mistakes and reasoning of methods. Once this is understood, steps can be taken to "correct" the thought process, providing a better service to the patient. Ultimately, I think the goal will be to understand the cognitive processes of the surgeons so well, that simulation can be tailored to every user for every situation, thereby making this training tool so useful for the entire population and maximizing the benefits for all types of patients.

(Thanks Mithra for a great lecture!)
