Week of 11/02/09

Content:  The lecture for this week was on research methods in healthcare IT using Intermountain Healthcare (IHC) as a case study. IHC utilizes its clinical data for quality improvements, cost reductions, and research. That clinical data is stored in a clinical data repository and enterprise data warehouse. IHC adheres to evidence based medicine by using published evidence external to their organization and internal evidence collected at their organization. The clinical data collected at IHC is used as medical evidence internal to their organization. Some of the things informatics are used for at IHC are integrating data from multiple sources, normalizing and standardizing data, storing data, and making the data accessible.

Dr. Parker helped me to understand more about what work as an informaticist can be like at a healthcare organization. Also, I like that he presented information about Intermountain Healthcare because it clearly exibits a successful use of informatics services. Being able to manage data so effectively at IHC allows that organization to use that data in a large number of ways. I agree with Lee and other people that have posted that IHC sets an example that I think a lot of other healthcare organizations will be interested in following in their informatics strategies. IHC's web page on quality and research includes a quote about their use of information technology:
